The Cedar of Lebanon

growing in Adare, is native to the mountains of the Eastern Mediterranean Basin.

This magnificent specimen is recorded by the National Tree Register as the largest Cedar of Lebanon in Ireland. It is more than 16 metres in height and over 10 metres in girth. Local lore suggests the tree was planted in 1645 AD, which would also make it the oldest tree of its type on the island.

In February 2014, during the high winds of Storm Darwin, the cedar suffered damage and there were fears for its survival. It has recovered under the watchful eye of the Adare Manor Estate Team and will hopefully continue to grace the bank of the River Maigue for centuries to come. It has recently survived the high winds of Storm Eowyn.
