John Kiely’s band of skilful young hurlers beat the reigning champions, Galway by 3-16 to 2-18 in front of 82,000 in Croke Park yesterday.
This is an eighth All Ireland SHC for Limerick, the first since 1973, and on this occasion the Limerick team was captained by Adare’s Declan Hannon, who had a magnificent game overall and crowned his performance with two brilliantly taken back to back points at a crucial stage of the game.
Well done Declan; the people of Adare salute you and the Limerick team.
Limerick led by 9 points with seventeen minutes left on the clock and at that stage the team looked home and dry and Limerick supporters were confident that the game was going our way. However, Galway did not give up and fought back to within one point and with over nine minutes of extra time played the ref blew the final whistle much to the relief of the thousands of who travelled to Croke Park or the Gaelic Grounds, or watched in bars and homes across the county.
